shadblow

Shad is running in the Northeast and that is the cue for one of our favorite native plants to bloom! Amelanchier canadensis (called shad or shadblow in these parts but also refereed to as serviceberry, juneberry, sarvistree and servicetree) can be found from the Carolinas all the way up the Maine coast. Our local common name refers to the plants uncanny ability to bloom at the same time as shad make their way up the local rivers to spawn. Amazing!
